Whether you are someone who loves the festivity of the holiday season or someone who simply tries to survive it—or, most likely, somewhere in between—having a few ideas to manage the ups and down of such a busy time of year can go a long way in making the holidays healthy and harmonious.

Here are a few tips to stay grounded and stress free this season (and always):

Breathe. When you feel stress creeping up, take a few moments to focus on the in and out of your breath. Be right there with it. See if you can make each new breath a little longer than the previous breath. Then, begin to breathe in peace and relaxation; let all of your concerns slip out with the exhale. Sigh through your mouth if it feels right.

Share. Take a few moments now, while we are still early in the holiday season, to identify a few key people in your life who you love and trust and who would be willing to listen when you might need them. If you’re stressed, don’t hold it in.

Nourish. When we’re stressed or busy, it’s easy to let taking care of ourselves go, or to fall back on some of our less supportive habits. Give yourself the gift of good food and good rest as often as possible. Also, realize that indulging a bit can be nourishing too! Choosing when to indulge and when to pass are the key.

Space. Take a little time each day to reflect and connect with yourself so you can asses your needs. Maybe a few minutes of journaling? Or meditation? Or sitting and staring at the wall? When you are able to take care of yourself, you are able to enjoy yourself! Happy Holidays!
